Paul Hull

Paul is a Certified Massage Therapist and has a Bachelor of Science in Theater from MTSU. In 2016, they founded and ran a Nashville movement arts space called Soulace for 3 years. They have been an instructor both at Soulace and at various other festivals and venues over the last 2 decades, including Playthink, Pagan Unity Festival, and several others. Over the years they have danced, sang, played a lot of different musical instruments, acted, designed shows, built costumes, built puppets, managed costume studios, and washed uncountable piles of performer’s laundry. At this time they are the Assistant Costume Shop Manager at the TN Repertory Theater. A longtime circus enthusiast, Paul first learned to juggle 34 years ago, and has been a poi spinner for 20 years. They are genuinely excited to share with others the techniques and tricks they have learned over the years.

Intro to Poi
This workshop will take the beginner at poi spinning through the very basics. We will cover: what is a poi, where poi come from, the parts of a poi, the origins of poi spinning, terminology, and a set of foundational moves. Those moves include but are not limited to: forward and reverse spinning in wheel plane and wall plane, together and split timings, basic wall plane butterflies, turning while spinning, simple stalls, and basic weaves. This playshop goes as far as I can take people in one session. Usually we make it through all the material above, and students always leave with plenty to practice as they move into becoming poi spinners. All ages are welcome, and, please be aware that children under 8 may find this very challenging.
Butterfly Variants
This class exists to level up your butterflies! While you can come and learn the basic butterfly here, you will definitely get more out of the playshop if you already have a basic butterfly in your trick bag. Techniques taught will include but are not limited to: Forward and reverse wall plane butterflies, thread the needle, flying your butterflies, butter flowers, wheel plane butterflies, butter weaves, sky plane butterflies, behind the back butterflies, and one-handed butterflies.
